Waller's Royal invite

13 September 2022 Written by VRC

Before heading to Royal Ascot with Nature Strip, Chris Waller recalls his encounter with the Queen and her love for the horse and for racing.

Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Chris Waller had a special connection with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, which has been recognised with an invitation to her funeral at London's Westminster Abbey on Monday. The trainer is one of the very few to receive an invitation, outside of dignitaries. Waller shared considerable time with the monarch, as he looked after many of her horses. He is currently training the stayer, Chalk Stream, which Her Majesty owned. He would speak with her often after the day's races to update her on her horse's progress and the Australian racing industry. The Queen also greatly admired Waller's stars back home, including of course, Winx and Nature Strip. They shared a passion for thoroughbred racehorses and the sport.
