All roads lead to Flemington – and for a lucky few, the journey begins with a Golden Ticket.

Eleven Golden Ticket winners are granted ballot exemption for the 2026 Lexus Melbourne Cup, affording their trainers and owners the luxury of preparing their horse to peak on that first Tuesday in November.

Whisky On The Hill claimed the first of eleven golden tickets into the 2026 Lexus Melbourne Cup with a determined victory in the Lexus Roy Higgins. Twelve months ago, he narrowly missed securing a Cup start but collected the $200,000 bonus for horses winning the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) after being balloted out. This time, with a golden ticket firmly in hand, he’s guaranteed a place in the field, and shapes as a genuine Lexus Melbourne Cup prospect.

ROY HIGGINS

Roy Henry Higgins MBE (1938–2014) was one of Australia’s greatest riders, winning eleven Melbourne Jockeys’ Premiership between 1965 and 1978. Among his career highlights were his twelve winners at the 1972 VRC three-day Autumn Carnival. Five times he rode five winners at a meeting. Roy began riding at Deniliquin, NSW, and retired from the saddle in October 1983 with more than 2500 winners. He won top- class races all over Australia including Melbourne Cups on Light Fingers (1965) and Red Handed (1967). Roy was an inaugural inductee into the Australian Racing Museum. His statue graces Flemington racecourse.

Lexus Andrew Ramsden (2800m) - May 16

Zakouma has secured his spot in the 2026 Lexus Melbourne Cup, producing a powerful late surge to claim the Lexus Andrew Ramsden (2800m) after settling near the rear of the field. Trainer Grahame Begg, who won this race in 2023 with Lunar Flare, now heads toward the Cup with Zakouma set to carry a light weight.

ANDREW RAMSDEN

Andrew Ramsden (1934–2013) served Australian racing in many roles. He was a member of the Victoria Racing Club Committee for 21 years from 1983, Vice Chairman 1988–90 and 1993–98, Honorary Treasurer 1991–98 and VRC Chairman from 1998 to 2003. He chaired the industry working group guiding the restructure of Victorian racing and privatisation of the TAB, and became a Board Member of Racing Victoria Ltd. From 2004 to 2006 he was Chairman of the Australian Racing Board. Andrew Ramsden enjoyed success as part-owner of many fine racehorses, notably Paris Lane and 1982 Melbourne Cup winner Gurner’s Lane.

Belmont Gold Cup (3219m) - June 4

Tawny Port relished the step up to two miles in the Belmont Gold Cup, tracking the lead bunch and switching back to the inside to race away with the golden ticket. The seven year-old son of Pioneerof the Nile switched to turf in the summer of 2023 after being a Kentucky Derby aspirant early in his career, finishing seventh behind Rich Strike in the 2022 Derby. Thursday's race was Tawny Port's second win on turf running well in top turf races in North America, including a second to Silawi in the 2025 Grade 1 Canadian International (2414m).

An emotional Alan King was “blown away” after Daiquiri Bay won the £500,000 Ebor Handicap. An expert ride from jockey Rossa Ryan saw the gelding stave off the challenges of Wathnan Racing pair Hopewell Rock and Opportunity. The win guarantees Daiquiri Bay a Lexus Melbourne Cup berth, although King remains unsure about travelling to Australia.

Australian Bloodstock have another Lexus Melbourne Cup aspirant after Defiantly won Group 2 Prix Kergorlay (3000m) in a brilliant front-running display at Deauville. The first time a golden ticket has been on offer in the famous French staying event, the Joseph O'Brien-trained gelding made all in the 3000-metre contest, following a brilliant ride by young Irish rider, Dylan Browne McMonagle. O'Brien has already won our great race twice with Rekindling (2017) and Twilight Payment (2020).

ARCHER

William Tell (GB) - Maid of the Oaks (Vagabond (GB))

Bay Stallion foaled in 1856 at Exeter Farm, Jembaicumbene NSW

The Sydney champion racehorse Archer was where the Melbourne Cup story began. He came – by ship – from New South Wales to win both the first and the second Melbourne Cups, 1861 and 1862. Trained by Etienne de Mestre, ridden by John ‘Cutts’ Dillon, twice he beat the local hope, Mormon. Today’s race began its long history as the Hotham Handicap in 1869, named to honour Sir Charles Hotham (1806–1855), the controversial Governor of Victoria, in office at the time of the Eureka rebellion at Ballarat. The Hotham, now the Archer, has been a traditional lead-up race to the Melbourne Cup, furnishing many winners.

BART CUMMINGS

James Bartholomew (Bart) Cummings AM (1927-2015) achieved ‘Legend’ status in both the Australian Racing Hall of Fame and the Sports Australia Hall of Fame. He trained a record 12 winners of the Melbourne Cup, between 1965 and 2008, including five Cup quinellas. His training career spanned 62 years, with more than 260 Group 1 level winners. He was six times premier trainer in Adelaide, five times in Melbourne, and once in Sydney. The VRC awarded him life membership, and in 2004 established “The Bart Cummings” in his honour, a stepping stone to the Melbourne Cup.
