The VRC Champions Mile

The Group 1 VRC Champions Mile, widely recognised by its former name, the Cantala Stakes, boasts a storied history dating back to 1919.

Originally launched on Victoria Derby Day, the race was established to honour Septimus Miller, a dedicated member of the VRC committee who served for over forty years, including twelve as Chairman. Miller chose to name the race not after himself, but after his property, Cantala, on Dandenong Road in Caulfield. Initially contested over a mile, the Cantala Stakes was shifted to the Final Day in 1960 and renamed the George Adams Handicap, in tribute to the founder of Tattersalls lotteries.

Over the years, the race has gone through various sponsorship titles, evolving alongside its place in the racing calendar. Returning to Victoria Derby Day in 2019, the race now stands as part of the revamped TAB Champions Stakes Day, a highlight for top-class mile contenders.
