The Road To The Cup—Dermot Weld

Legendary Irish trainer Dermot Weld is forever etched into the history of the Lexus Melbourne Cup by paving the way for an international assault on our great race that continues today.

In 1993, he did what most thought was impossible - bring a horse from Ireland to win our greatest race. That horse was Vintage Crop, and then in 2002 he won his second Cup with Media Puzzle, on an emotion-charged day at Flemington that no-one will forget.

Dermot went close to winning a third Cup in 2004 with his champion stayer Vinnie Roe, but came up against the mighty mare Makybe Diva.

In this Road To The Cup special, Dermot speaks openly with Aly Vance about his love affair for Australia and the Lexus Melbourne Cup.
