The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) today announced Australian singer-songwriter and swimming sensation Cody Simpson will sing the Australian National Anthem on Lexus Melbourne Cup Day in the famous Flemington Mounting Yard ahead of ‘the race that stops a nation’™ on Tuesday 1 November.

Cody said he was honoured to be able to sing the Australian National Anthem on one of the nation’s greatest days in sport and is looking forward to returning to Flemington for Cup Week, having first visited in 2015 where he delighted race-goers on Stakes Day with a live performance.

“To be performing the Australian National Anthem on Lexus Melbourne Cup Day is an incredible honour and privilege.

I’m looking forward to performing in front of a packed crowd at Flemington and to the hundreds of millions of people tuning in from across the globe,” Cody said.

“Cup Week has been one of my favourite major events since I first visited Flemington in 2015.  The Cup has a unique ability to unite people from all walks of life to celebrate elite athletes both equine and human, exhilarating racing action and electric entertainment.”

VRC Chairman Neil Wilson said the club was delighted to welcome Cody back to Flemington.

“Cody exemplifies the pursuit of excellence in both the sporting and the entertainment industry. We look forward to him performing our National Anthem ahead of the Lexus Melbourne Cup,” Mr Wilson said.

“Cody is an inspiring young Australian who shows us that when you work hard and put your mind to something, anything is possible and you can achieve your dreams.”

A teen-singing sensation, Cody decided to return to his childhood passion of swimming during the pandemic in 2019. The 25-year-old superstar qualified for the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games where he showcased his talents to the world stage, winning gold in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay and silver in the 4 x 100m medley relay.

Lexus Melbourne Cup Day is the jewel in the crown of Cup Week and features a stellar entertainment line-up including Birds of Tokyo, Sneaky Sound System and Baker Boy, who will all perform live in The Park, with entry free with every Melbourne Cup Carnival ticket.

The Melbourne Cup Carnival is proudly one of Victoria’s biggest sporting and cultural events, attracting up to 300,000 racegoers to Flemington Racecourse and generating over $430 million for the Victorian economy each year.

Cup Week commences with Penfolds Victoria Derby Day on Saturday 29 October, followed by Lexus Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 1 November, Kennedy Oaks Day on Thursday 3 November and TAB Champions Stakes Day on Saturday 5 November.
