Dress the code

Each day during the Melbourne Cup Carnival has its unique vibe and dress code—from the classic and understated to the bold and statement-making. Penfolds Victoria Derby Day has a strict monochrome dress code—think sleek black and white with the best look being one that combines the two. Lexus Melbourne Cup Day encourages bold, standout looks, the brief being go big or go home. Choose eye-catching headwear, impactful accessories and an outfit that showcases your sartorial strengths. Next is Crown Oaks Day, which is synonymous with all things floral and feminine. Finally, TAB Champions Stakes Day is the most relaxed of the dress codes—think floaty summer dresses, boater hats and flat sandals.

Trend report

Here are four ways to ensure your sartorial choices are on track at this year's MCC Fashions on the Field.

Block colours

Block colours

A key look for spring is to create a striking, confident look by choosing an outfit in a block colour. Wearing a head-to-toe tonal ensemble elevates an outfit with sleek, understated elegance.

Prints are perfect

Florals - delicate and detailed, or daring and abstract - are a sure-fire hit for spring.  Be inspired by nature's vibrancy and reinvent classic patterns with bold, modern interpretations, mixing oversized blooms and intricate motifs.

Structured tailoring

Structured tailoring

Another key trend for 2024 is structured tailoring. Choose pieces that emphasise sharp silhouettes and strong lines, and opt for a blend of classic shapes with contemporary cuts for a polished, modern aesthetic.

Demure, mindful

Minimal, feminine dressing is on trend, with a focus on simplicity and pared-back sophistication. Highlight clean lines, neutral tones and refined silhouettes to create a chic look that prioiritises quality and quantity.

Fancy footwear

While a stiletto is a look that never fails to make a statement, sky-high heels aren’t practical for a long day trackside. Instead, take cues from spring/summer 2024 trends and choose a mid-heel or flat option. Kitten heels are ideal for trackside, as are a pair of chic mules that can provide the perfect balance of comfort and sophistication.

How to shop headwear

Headwear is arguably the pièce de résistance of race-day fashion. A well-chosen hat, fascinator or headpiece can elevate your look from stylish to show-stopping. This year sees a return to classic styles with a contemporary twist—think a wide-brimmed boater in a bright colour, delicate longline bows, or intricately decorated headbands. Consider the practical aspects too. Will your headwear stay secure in the breeze? Can you see clearly under its brim? And, most importantly, does it balance your outfit? A top-heavy ensemble can appear awkward, so ensure your headpiece complements your outfit rather than competing with it.

Accessories

When accessorising for the Melbourne Cup Carnival this year, think of your pieces as the finishing touches that elevate your ensemble to new heights. Opt for statement jewellery—perhaps a pair of sculptural earrings or a delicate layered necklace—that adds just the right amount of sparkle without overshadowing your look. Your handbag should be both chic and functional; a sleek clutch or a petite crossbody in a luxe material is ideal. Don’t forget the power of a well-chosen belt to cinch your waist or add definition to a flowy dress, and consider a pair of oversized sunglasses for a touch of mystery and glamour. Each accessory should harmonise with your outfit, creating a polished head-to-toe statement worthy of the Carnival’s fashionable crowd.

Follow the rules

Fashion isn't just about clothes—it's also about how you wear them. Race-day etiquette is as crucial as your ensemble. Remember to dress appropriately for the occasion and respect the traditions and expectations of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
