Cylinder impresses up the straight

9 February 2024 Written by VRC

Godolphin head trainer James Cummings was delighted with the work put in by Cylinder at this morning’s jump outs down the Flemington straight.

The three-year-old son of Exceed And Excel took part in an 800m jump out alongside fellow Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) aspirants Espiona and The Astrologist, working to the line just ahead of the latter in the run to the post.

Cummings was happy with the building tempo of the jump out.

“I like the fact that it seemed like the pace of the trial was largely in the last 400 metres, and it was a good run to the line for them, and our colt, who already had a solid hit out last week, he got another good hit out this morning in order to be ready for the Lightning if we run him there next Saturday.”

Cylinder wore blinkers in the jump out and Cummings believes that he has him fit and ready to fire at his fresh run.

“With where he is at the moment, I think he’s in the right frame of mind to run a really good race first-up, wherever we go.”

Cummings’ is “quietly hopeful" his stable of stars are in good order and ready to target some of the features of the autumn.

The master trainer also provided an update on his other headline horses including Flemington Group 1 winners Zardozi and Cascadian.

Coming off the back of a light spring campaign, last year’s Group 1 TAB Australian Cup winner, Cascadian will be looking to emulate his feats of last year with another Australian Cup campaign most likely on the agenda. The 2023 Group 1 VRC Oaks winner Zardozi will look to resume racing next month while Tom Kitten resumes on Saturday in the Eskimo Prince Stakes at Randwick.

Join us in celebrating the legacy of the great Black Caviar whose stellar career consisted of 25 undefeated races. Some of the world’s fastest horses will be lining up in the $1,000,000 Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m), named in the legendary mare’s honour.
