Champion jockey Jamie Kah takes the reins as Melbourne Cup Carnival ambassador

23 October 2024 Written by VRC

The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) has today announced champion jockey Jamie Kah as an official ambassador of the VRC and the 2024 Melbourne Cup Carnival.

World renowned, Jamie is one of the most sought-after jockeys in Australia and has already secured her ride in the 2024 Lexus Melbourne Cup aboard Point King. Jamie guided the six-year-old trained by last year’s Cup winning trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman to automatic qualification via the Lexus Archer Stakes at Flemington in September.

Horses have always been an important part of Jamie’s life. She joined the Mount Pleasant Pony Club at an early age before representing Australia in the Mounted Games World Championships, which she often credits for developing her skills for success on the racetrack.

She continues to showcase her passion for horses by spending her downtime training and competing former racehorses in showjumping.

One of those thoroughbreds is Dollar for Dollar, whom Jamie rode throughout his career including a win at Flemington during the 2017 Melbourne Cup Carnival, before their partnership transitioned into the showjumping arena.

Jamie said she was delighted to use her platform to promote the Melbourne Cup Carnival and equine sports.

“I genuinely love horses and am excited to showcase the elite athleticism that thoroughbreds are capable of,” Ms Kah said.

“The Melbourne Cup Carnival is one of the biggest weeks on the racing calendar, so I am looking forward to taking in the atmosphere of Cup Week and competing at Flemington.

“I’ve loved being part of this year’s Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour and sharing the People’s Cup with people in regional communities who may never get to Flemington has been extra special.”

As part of her role with the VRC Jamie will support the Melbourne Cup Carnival broadcast on Channel Nine, providing exclusive access to her pre-race trainer briefings and wearing a jockey cam for some of the week’s biggest races. Jamie’s time on the road as part of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour included visits to Murray Bridge, Nathalia and Trentham where she shared the magic of the People’s Cup with local residents.

VRC Chief Executive Officer Kylie Rogers said the club was thrilled to announce Jamie as an ambassador to champion the sport of racing and the love of the horse.

“Jamie’s achievements on the track speak for themselves having won more than 1200 races including 14 Group 1 wins, seven of those at Flemington highlighted by the Yulong Newmarket Handicap and Howden Australian Guineas this year,” Ms Rogers said.

“Jamie is also a strong advocate for off the track thoroughbreds and their versatility in post-racing careers. She truly lives and breathes horses, dedicating most of her time outside of racing to caring for her retired racehorses and showcasing their brilliance in the equestrian arena.

"As well as supporting the VRC’s equine welfare initiatives, we are grateful to Jamie for her ongoing support of the club's community initiatives including as an ambassador on the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour, which has seen her travel to regional towns and communities throughout Australia to share the iconic trophy and inspire people of all ages.
