Boys to the Bush: Empowering youth across regional Australia

18 June 2024 Written by VRC

The Boys to the Bush (BttB) initiative focuses on preventative and early intervention strategies for disengaged young males. Since its inception in 2017, BttB has impacted more than 10,000 lives through mentoring programs, camps, school initiatives, and community engagement days.

A registered not-for-profit, community-based charity, BttB has a proven history of engaging with and improving outcomes for some of the community’s most vulnerable youth. Boys to the Bush’s important work is built upon providing these youth with positive role models. These role models help the youth develop a sense of purpose, building self-respect, mateship, resilience, community connections, and confidence.

Addressing regional challenges

In rural and regional communities, young people often face formidable challenges. The statistics paint a stark picture: these children are twice as likely to enter out-of-home care compared to their metropolitan counterparts, and their educational and health outcomes lag significantly behind. BttB steps into this void, providing crucial support that local schools and community services often struggle to meet alone.

Programs that make a difference

BttB’s success lies in its diverse programs tailored to meet the specific needs of regional youth. The 1:1 MENtoring Programs, conducted weekly over nine weeks, form the backbone of their intervention strategy. These programs not only enhance educational engagement but also impart crucial life skills, foster Indigenous cultural connections, and promote mental health awareness. Each session is meticulously designed to build confidence, instil respect, and nurture positive social behaviors.

Aaron’s story

Aaron entered BttB through child-protection services after a tumultuous upbringing marked by multiple foster placements. Initially withdrawn, Aaron discovered a passion for fishing during BttB activities, sparking a remarkable transformation. Through mentorship and engaging activities aligned with his interests, Aaron blossomed into a confident, socially adept boy.

Engaging communities, building futures

Beyond individual success stories, BttB thrives on community involvement. Using a relationship-based approach, BttB engages with the community to create better long-term outcomes for youth in regional areas. The organisation collaborates with stakeholders such as schools and businesses to create a supportive network for participants. This approach not only enhances program effectiveness but also fosters a sense of belonging and responsibility among the boys.

Connecting with nature

Boys to the Bush Camps offer participants immersive experiences that go beyond the classroom. Held during school holidays across regional locations, these camps provide opportunities for hands-on learning, outdoor adventures, skill-building activities, and a technology break. From working with animals to water sports, each camp fosters camaraderie and personal growth, facilitated by positive male role models who guide the boys towards becoming responsible and capable young men.

Vision for the future

“It’s easier to build a strong boy than repair a broken man."

BttB is committed to expanding its footprint across 32 regional communities in New South Wales and Victoria by 2030. The organisation aims to triple its impact, and seeks to bridge the gap in education, enhance employment prospects, and improve overall wellbeing for regional youth.

Key statistics

  • 99% of BttB participants are from regional, rural and remote communities.
  • 58% are from out-of-home-care (OOHC) living arrangements. (50,000 Australian kids are living in OOHC.)
  • 92% of participants feel more confident and more connected to their local community after working with BttB.
