Striking black racehorse So Si Bon was a unique and charismatic horse known for his good looks, longevity, versatility, and consistent performances in high-level races.

Trained initially by Robbie Laing before transferring to the Lindsay Park stable of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig, So Si Bon amassed $2.3 million in career prizemoney over an impressive 95-start career.

Early in his career, So Si Bon showed promise as a three-year-old, with credible efforts in Group 1 races like the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and Victoria Derby (2500m) and a third-place finish in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m). However, he developed a reputation for being enigmatic, often running well without winning.

After being gelded in 2018, he turned into a tough, durable competitor. One of his key wins came in the 2019 Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) up the Flemington straight, where he showcased his trademark strong finish, notching only his third career win at start 38.

Another notable Flemington highlight was a close up fourth finish in the 2019 Group 1 Cantala Stakes (1600m), beaten only 1.5L in the Melbourne Cup Carnival feature.

So Si Bon won or placed in 15 stakes races, and competed in 26 Group 1s, placing in prestigious events such as the Rosehill Guineas (2000m), the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m), the Memsie Stakes (1400m), and the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m). While he didn’t win at the elite level, he gained a loyal following due to his striking looks, long career, and ability to consistently perform in top-class races.

By the end of his stellar racing career, So Si Bon had recorded multiple Listed and Group 3 victories, amassing over $2 million in earnings, and contesting nearly 100 races, a testament to his durability and competitiveness.
