Lankan Rupee, a beloved sprinter known for his distinctive heart-shaped star on his forehead, was one of the Australia’s top sprinters in the mid-2010s.  

Trained by Mick Price and owned by Muzaffar Yaseen, he amassed over $4 million in prizemoney and won five of the most prestigious Group 1 sprint races in Australia. In 2014, he became the highest-rated Australian-trained horse and the highest-rated sprinter in the world. 

Lankan Rupee’s career took off when he reeled off a series of dominant displays in premier sprints, including three Group 1s in the autumn of 2014: the Oakleigh Plate (1100m), the Newmarket Handicap (1200m), and the TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).  

His win in the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington was one of his most notable, as he carried 56.5kg and stormed home by 2.5 lengths, reinforcing his status as an elite sprinter. He capped off his 2013-14 season with a win in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick, taking his season tally to seven wins and a third from eight starts. 

Returning in the spring of 2014, Lankan Rupee added another major sprint, claiming the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley, demonstrating his blistering speed. However, injuries and weight carried in handicaps made it difficult for him to replicate his peak form consistently.

Lankan Rupee’s last career win came in the 2015 Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m), reeling in the tear-away leader, Fab Fevola, to burst clear in an impressive performance.

Lankan Rupee’s dominance in Australia’s elite sprinting races made him a fan favourite, and his achievements continue to be celebrated. His Flemington heroics, particularly his Newmarket Handicap and Lightning Stakes wins, are highlights of a stellar career that placed him in elite company.
