Vale Colin McKenna: A true gentleman of racing

1 November 2024 Written by VRC

The Australian racing industry mourned the passing of one of Victoria’s finest in October, Colin McKenna, who passed away at the age of 74 after a short illness.

McKenna’s journey in racing began with his first winner in 1974, leading him to become one of the largest and most influential owners in Australia.

Long-time friend and trainer Mick O’Leary, who has trained at Mount Gambier for the past 60 years, praised McKenna, stating,

“No finer man nor more generous a person than Colin McKenna. He was the most genuine and supportive person you could ever ask for.”

McKenna’s passion for jumps racing was unparalleled. Whether he purchased a horse or bred one at home, his enthusiasm shone through. And it was Warrnambool, the thriving western district city, that he loved the most.

He was a part-owner of 2024 Caulfield Cup champion Duke De Sessa and also Future History, recent winner of the JRA Cup.  His most successful horses included Jameka, Merchant Navy (winner of the Coolmore Stud Stakes and Diamond Jubilee Stakes), Regina Coeli (a two-time Grand Annual Steeplechase victor), Hissing Sid (twice victorious in the Warrnambool Cup), Attrition (Toorak Handicap winner), Wil John (Jericho Cup winner), and Another Wil.

His ownership portfolio also included notable horses like Alaskan God, Buffalo River, Gregers, Moudre, Ruthven, Seaburge, The Fuzz, and Interpretation, who is aiming for a third consecutive Melbourne Cup appearance this year.

In recognition of his significant contributions to the community, McKenna was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2021. This honour acknowledged his involvement with Peter's Project (Warrnambool Cancer Treatment Centre), the Warrnambool Racing Club, and his extensive philanthropic endeavors.

Ciaron Maher, who McKenna helped transform into one of Australia’s top trainers, attributed much of his success to McKenna’s support. Their partnership has thrived, particularly over the past decade, as Maher expanded his multi-state operation.

Maher shared a heartfelt message on social media shortly after McKenna’s passing, saying,

“Heaven gained a true gentleman this morning.” The Hayes Empire echoed this sentiment, calling him “a true legend of the sport.”

Trainer Mitch Freedman, who prepares Attrition, expressed his gratitude, stating that McKenna was one of the most loyal and supportive owners he had encountered. “He was always there to help, and I’ll never forget him,” Freedman said.

Jonathan Munz, Chairman of the Thoroughbred Racehorse Owners Association, expressed sorrow over McKenna’s untimely passing, but summed him up perfectly.

“Col was a passionate racehorse owner and huge supporter of the industry. More importantly, he was a terrific bloke and a man of great loyalty and integrity. He will be missed by everyone.”
