Dermot Cantillon, Chairman of Naas Racecourse, took pride in hosting the event. “It’s iconic to have the Melbourne Cup here,” he remarked. “I’m incredibly proud as chairman of the racecourse.” Cantillon’s personal connection to the Cup dates back to 2002 when, as racing manager for Michael Smurfit, he delivered the acceptance speech after Media Puzzle’s victory.
Founded in 1924 following Ireland’s independence, Naas Racecourse embodies the Irish affinity for horse racing. The Melbourne Cup’s visit was a tribute to this enduring passion and the strong bond between the two nations.
A plaque commemorating Robert Cooper Bagot, a significant figure in the history of Flemington and the Melbourne Cup, was unveiled during the event. Bagot, the first Secretary of the Victoria Racing Club, was born in Fontstown, County Kildare, just a short distance from Naas. The occasion also featured a race named in his honour.
The Honourable Gary Gray, Australian Ambassador to Ireland, was in attendance and expressed his pride in the Melbourne Cup’s visit to Ireland, believing it cements the event’s global significance.
