Andrea Atzeni: Taking another shot at the Cup

29 October 2024 Written by VRC

Italian jockey Andrea Atzeni first rode in the Melbourne Cup a decade ago, partnering My Ambivalent in the race won by Protectionist. Now based in Hong Kong, he has claimed notable victories in Group 1 races across Italy, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Canada, the UAE, Germany, and most recently, Australia. Following his ride on Zardozi to a commendable fourth in the 2024 Caulfield Cup, James Cummings has asked Atzeni to hop on board once again, this time in the Lexus Melbourne Cup.

Earlier this year, Andrea Atzeni captured the hearts of the racing world with an emotional victory in the Group 1 Sydney Cup aboard Circle Of Fire, dedicating the win to his close friend and fellow jockey Stefano Cherchi, who tragically passed away following a race fall. Atzeni’s heartfelt tribute resonated with racing fans globally.

Atzeni partnered with talented mare and 2023 VRC Oaks winner Zardozi in the Caulfield Cup, and with trainer James Cummings pleased with both the jockey’s and horse’s abilities, the partnership has been extended to the first Tuesday in November.

Having ridden in the 2014 Melbourne Cup once before, Atzeni vividly recalls the electrifying atmosphere of the event. He shared, “The build-up was unbelievable. And when you walk outside to the crowds, just before the race... the atmosphere, it’s unbelievable.”

He acknowledges the Melbourne Cup’s unique challenges, stating, “You need a horse with a bit of pace... but also one that can sustain the stamina.”

Atzeni’s international experience grants him a unique perspective on the Melbourne Cup. While he compares it to prestigious events like Royal Ascot, he admits the Cup holds a special place for Australians. “Everyone just stops for that particular race, and the build-up is like nothing I’ve ever seen before,” he said.
