I have started learning millinery in 2018 as a hobby via some online courses as I am located in Hong Kong where the market of millinery hat is pretty niche. This year, I have spent more time in millinery making and this is the first time I join a millinery hat competition. The headpiece that entered into the competition was named “Lotus & Dragonfly” of which I integrated some Chinese elements into it deliberately. For instance, I used the Chinese thread wrapping flower technique (in putonghua “Chanhua”) for the production of the dragonfly. It is a technique that combines the use of card paper, embroidery thread and copper wire. Moreover, I applied the concept of “Cheong Sam” (in putonghua “Qipao”), a traditional body-hugging dress which worn by Chinese women), such that my hat base was double-sided made to allow overlapping and closing to the right as if the neckline of “Cheong Sam”. I also made sets of Chinese knot so as to adopt them as buttons for the said neckline. In Chinese, “Lotus & Dragonfly” symbolised good luck & good health and have been widely used in Chinese paintings or some porcelains and may I seize this opportunity to wish you all a “Good Luck” and “Good Health”.
